Nothing Happens By Chance: How Brands Grow Without Betting the Company

The brands that catch a trend are almost never lucky. They spent years ready for a wave nobody else could see yet.

A trend is not something you switch on. By the time everyone can see it, the brand that owns it was already there, with the distribution, the demand and the product built. Everyone else is early to a party that already has a host.

And the brands still standing decades later share a second habit. They grow without ever betting the company.

Micaela Pallini on 150 years of Pallini, a premium Limoncello built before the Spritz, winning the home turf through duty free, and growing without betting the company.

Micaela Pallini is the fifth generation to run Pallini, the Roman family distiller founded in 1875. She has a PhD in chemistry, reformulated the family's premium Limoncello di Amalfi herself, and was the first woman to lead both the company and Federvini, the Italian wine and spirits association. Under her, Pallini went from a fading Sambuca house to roughly 60% of the global duty-free Limoncello business across more than 80 markets.

She has a line for how the family thinks about movement and risk.

Business cannot stand still. If you stand still, you automatically go back. So you have to find your way of working, of investing, keep the company strong, and build it one step at a time.

Most brands do the opposite. They stand still until a trend appears, then bet the company trying to catch it.
